Revered as one of the twentieth century’s purest expressions of Self-realization, Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) taught that liberation arises through ātma-vichāra; self-inquiry into the source of the “I.” His words, few yet penetrating, revealed the illusion of ego and the immediacy of the Self. “The Self,” he said, “is the true Guru; the human form only serves as an aid until that recognition stabilizes.” In Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi and Guru Vachaka Kovai, he returned often to this: the Guru’s “real presence” is not the body but the still consciousness that shines in all beings. For the sincere, even the thought of the Sage carries the same transformative force as standing before him.

A former police officer turned spiritual master, Atmananda Krishna Menon (1883–1959) offered one of the most precise and pragmatic articulations of non-dual realization. His two principal works, Atma Darshan and Atma Nirvriti, lay out a methodical inquiry that completely bypasses, and even discourages, ritual and belief, leading directly to recognition of consciousness as the sole reality. It was his approach that would ultimately come to be known simply as, the direct path.

The Indian sage Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897–1981) gained worldwide recognition through “I Am That,” a record of his dialogues held in a small apartment in Bombay. His style was fierce, uncompromising, and unsentimental, cutting directly through conceptual spirituality to the bare fact of awareness. Ramana Maharshi would often sit in sheet silence despite the presence of those who came from great distances to be in his presence. Nisargadatta, in stark contrast, made his teaching pointedly plain with sharpness and volume.

A longtime devotee of Ramana Maharshi, Annamalai Swami (1906–1995) lived and worked under Bhagavan’s instruction for decades. His later talks, compiled in Living by the Words of Bhagavan, express the same uncompromising truth in childlike simplicity and warmth.

A European Advaitin and teacher of the “direct path,” Jean Klein (1912–1998) embodied a refined, aesthetic, and experiential approach. His background as a musician and physician informed his emphasis on effortless listening and somatic stillness.

Her online satsangs and commentaries bridge intellectual comprehension and lived awareness with approachability and warmth.

Michael James is a British scholar and devotee of Ramana Maharshi who has spent decades translating and explicating Ramana’s original Tamil works. His book Happiness and the Art of Being presents a lucid synthesis of Bhagavan’s entire teaching.
